Most important comment: do yourself a favor that will save you time and effort, and read "it starts with the egg". I was not happy with the level of communication from the team on the topic of supplements. It just seems like the people working at this clinic either are not up to date with recent studies, or they just do not care enough to educate the patients. Scheduling is also really difficult. When I show up for an appointment, I find them running so behind schedule that they keep a whiteboard that reports how late they are for the various procedures (it goes between 10 minutes, to 25 or more than 40 minutes late). Being very late is so embedded in the way they work that they even have a system for it. It just makes us patients feel like they just do not care.

Dr. Cakmak is wonderful. However, during an appointment in November, he recommended I start medicated cycles. It’s now February and despite calling and messaging his office repeatedly, sometimes multiple times a week, I have not yet been prescribed. I am promised calls back I never get. I feel low priority given I’m not yet ready for a big ticket procedure. For context my partner and I have done all preliminary testing for treatment, and the appointment in November was the care plan call. Given how emotional and stressful this process already is, I’m surprised at how inconsiderate the administration team is.

I cannot say enough positive things about Dr. Shapiro and her team. From the first meeting, we felt very supported, well educated about each step in the IVF process, and were impressed with the kindness and professionalism of all the staff. The IVF process was personally very emotional, at times overwhelming,- YET the UCSF staff were always incredibly responsive both in the messaging portal that I used a lot and over the phone. I ended up going through two rounds of egg retrievals and had some unexpected sad experiences with the first round. Dr. Shapiro and her team were so kind, compassionate, supportive and competent through it all. After two rounds of retrievals (at age 42) we prepared for the transfer. Dr. Shapiro moved around her schedule to be able to do the transfer herself. Our embryo implanted and now I’m writing this review with my three month old daughter sleeping in a wrap on me. We would not have the privilege of having our baby girl without the support and expertise of Dr. Shapiro’s team. In particular, Vivian and Katherine, both on Dr. Shapiro’s team, were so unbelievably patient with me and kind through the whole process. Looking back at the patient portal we exchanged over 172 messages! They went above and beyond to help answer my questions and offer support through a very difficult time. I highly recommend this clinic for IVF and in particular, Dr. Shapiro and her team. Thank you for making a miracle possible for us.
