What to watch out for at New Direction Fertility Centers?

  • warning Inconsistent communication from staff

Numerous reviews express frustration regarding the clinic's non-medical staff, indicating issues with disorganized communication and responsiveness. Patients recount experiences of unanswered emails, delayed responses, and a feeling of being treated as just a number rather than as individuals undergoing a sensitive treatment process.

  • warning Lack of personalized attention

Some patients felt that the emphasis on efficient operations led to a lack of personalized care. Instances of feeling ignored or dismissed by support staff are mentioned, causing additional emotional strain during a challenging journey.

  • warning Financial transparency issues

Several reviews mention concerns about upfront payments and financial policies, with some patients unhappy about unexpected costs. This has led to feelings of being financially pressured during treatment, which can be disheartening for those already facing fertility challenges.

  • warning Stressful coordination for out-of-state patients

While many reviews praise New Direction for their accommodating practices, some out-of-state patients experienced additional stress in coordinating appointments and tests due to communication breakdowns and the clinic's policies. This has prompted recommendations for smoother processes for non-local patients.

  • warning Mixed experiences in follow-up care

Reviews reveal varying experiences concerning post-treatment follow-up and support. While some patients report loving their care team, others have indicated dissatisfaction with the attention and resources available after primary treatments concluded, expressing a desire for more consistent follow-up support.

I can’t say enough great things about this fertility clinic and the entire staff that works here! From their receptionists to phlebotomists, ultrasounds techs, doctors, and everyone in between, trusting the people here at New Direction was the best decision. Communication was speedy quick, results always delivered promptly, and everyone just genuinely cared about my experience (even for quick blood draws). I used to be so nervous to get my blood drawn and everyone who took it was always so efficient, kind, and helped distract me. The ultrasound tech was always so prepared to answer any questions and was so incredibly helpful. Thank you all for the care you put forward for your patients!

While everyone’s situation is uniquely their own, I know now, after experiencing a different provider, that my time here resulted in a major deficit of communication (and support) — a critically important facet of this entire process. Additionally, it is equally important that there is a care team that is there to answer questions by *phone* (in addition to the existing patient portal) and in a compassionate manner. Not only is the medication process extremely disorganized (at one point, resulting in me paying hundreds of dollars out of pocket in unneeded meds), but due to communication issues, my treatment plan was also disrupted.

The notable positive I had was one team member who truly seemed like they were invested in our journey. This person exuded compassion … but fertility treatment is a highly integrated, collaborative and inter-professionally driven process, and unfortunately my experience at ND did not encompass this. I have no doubt that the team cares about their patients, but the communication process is extremely flawed, and when you’re dealing with such a significant issue as communication in this environment, it unfortunately affects many aspects related to the patient’s experience and treatment … and in this case, unnecessary mistakes.

Overall, I would not recommend this center — especially knowing there are other quality providers equipped with the right communication acumen to handle the intricate, sensitive, and timely needs that patients undergoing fertility treatments require.

(The fact that the owner of this clinic is replying to some these reviews, expanding upon a patient’s personal medical / treatment journey — based on their records — is an egregious violation of PHI furthering showing the lack of professionalism and humility needed in this sensitive environment.)

I have loved my time with New Direction Fertility under the care of Dr. Johnson! So much that it was incredibly bittersweet graduating from their clinic upon them helping us with achieving pregnancy! I have done an IVF, two frozen embryo transfers, and an IUI (the IUI worked - which was nuts for us). I truly will miss the warm embrace from the front desk, and how sweet Charlotte is! She is so kind and made me feel so comfortable every visit that she assisted Dr. Johnson with. The phlebotomists were incredible, as well! Every single one of them is caring and carry-on great conversation that help ease our nerves. We truly never wanted to leave this office! I would recommend Dr. Johnson and New Direction to all family/friends needing assistance w/ battling fertility needs.

I have had a rollercoaster experience with them. I was frustrated that despite expressing my concerns a number of times in writing and over the phone with a few different staff members, I continued to experience frequent miscommunication and scheduling issues. Once I stated that I would be discontinuing services, several of the staff members worked to address my concerns and help me have a better experience. I decided to stay because I had made it as far in the process as I had. However, I still want to help others by explaining my experience so prospective patients can be prepared and make an informed decision. At our initial consultation, we were told it would be doable to start IVF within 2 months. Instead, it took 4 months to complete pre-IVF requirements because the clinic’s expectations were unclear. Staff frequently referenced a required “checklist,” but despite asking for this list, I was never given a copy until after all testing was completed. Having that checklist given to us at the initial consultation—with instructions on if a test depended on a cycle day or not—would have allowed us to ask to have some tests lumped together or have lab orders sent closer to our home to streamline the initial testing process. My husband had to travel 1.5 hours for testing, canceling his own patients and losing income, only to be told afterward that a required blood test was missed due to a scheduling error. While lab orders were eventually sent closer to home, the mistake caused additional delays. When this was raised with the office manager, there was only defensiveness and deferral of responsibility to the doctor. Scheduling was a recurring problem. 1 appointment was changed without my consent, I didn’t answer an unfamiliar out-of-state number (when all previous appointments had been scheduled via texting) and received a voicemail saying my slot was given to someone else because I didn't answer, and 2 of my 4 in-person appointments were not on the schedule the day of the appointment. The 1st time, I called that morning to verify my appointment since I didn’t receive written confirmation after the doctor verbally scheduled it. It was not on the schedule. I received a text message later that day implying that I was at fault. In response to this issue, the office manager called and only took accountability for this error when I pushed. This error meant this test was delayed by an entire cycle. The most concerning experience occurred during a visit to discuss whether IVF would need to be delayed due to a health concern. I had received a text message and a document with my appointment time. When I arrived, I was not on the schedule, and was told that Dr. Johnson wasn't in the office. After I showed the receptionist the text, I waited 15 minutes while they scrambled. My ultrasound was completed by someone else who told me it looked like I would need to delay, but that Dr. Johnson would call me the next day with the results (the deadline for starting IVF was the next day). Dr. Johnson did not call the next day. A few days later, I told them I was going to discontinue services. After that, Michelle Murphy (NP) and Dr. Johnson called me several times over the next few days and met with me. They explained that I didn't need to delay IVF when looking at all my test results. They researched to understand what happened, took accountability for the mistakes that had taken place with my care, and did what they could to help me have a better experience with communication with the clinic. I am grateful that they worked to make it right and regain trust, but it was discouraging that steps were not taken to improve my experience until I stated I was discontinuing care. IVF is a hard process due to tests, medications, and costs, but it is also hard because most patients are battling a lot of triggers due to past trauma in reproductive care. I hope New Direction makes some changes in the communication process so other patients don't experience the rollercoaster I did.

I am speaking with Susan. I updated my survey because of contact issues. But I have spoken to Susan and she reassured me of prices and procedures. I’m waiting to see if my insurance covers anything.
