What to watch out for at Hanabusa IVF?

  • warning Inconsistent Communication

Critical updates, such as urgent medication orders, are sometimes delivered after office hours, leaving patients without timely guidance and forcing rushed decisions.

  • warning Variable Nurse Support

While many nurses are praised, some patients report rude attitudes and inadequate instruction, particularly regarding medication administration videos and demos.

  • warning Billing Disputes and Service Holds

Charges for unused services, such as a calcium bath, have led to account suspensions over relatively small balances, creating frustration and perceived inconsistency.

  • warning Limited Direct Doctor Access Post‑Consultation

After the initial visit, communication shifts to nurses, reducing direct interaction with physicians and causing uncertainty for complex questions.

  • warning High Cash‑Only Costs

The all‑cash model, with fees of $500 per visit and additional medication expenses, can be prohibitive for patients seeking insurance coverage.

I truly cannot say enough good things about Hanabusa IVF. My experience there from start to finish was fantastic, which I am especially grateful for considering how stressful the IVF process is to begin with. For background purposes, I was 39 with a prematurely low AMH of 0.5 when I started my IVF journey. I’d had a tubal ligation in my late 20s, because I was convinced I never wanted to have kids. I had never been pregnant, nor had I ever tried to become pregnant. When I finally did change my mind, I consulted with a clinic in L.A. that offered tubal ligation reversal surgery. They had agreed to do the surgery, and I spent several weeks trying to schedule it, only to be told that they weren’t going to do it after all because they didn’t think it was going to be successful. I decided to go the IVF route, and they told me that due to my low AMH, I would need to do mini-IVF. I knew absolutely nothing about IVF going into all of this, so I asked what the difference was between regular IVF and mini-IVF, and I was told that they just “charge less because it’s less likely to work.” After wasting nearly two months of my time at that clinic, I decided to look for a different clinic closer to me, as I live in San Diego County. That’s when I found Hanabusa. Before my consultation, I was absolutely devastated and heartbroken, convinced that I had ruined my chances of ever being able to have a child with my husband. After my consultation with Dr. LeBlanc, I felt actual hope for the first time. She explained to me in detail what exactly mini-IVF was and how it worked. She was realistic, but she was so kind and compassionate, and she made me feel like all was not lost. I really needed that. I was anxious during my entire treatment because I didn’t realize how long the process takes, nor how critical timing is. Every time I would start to panic, Dr. LeBlanc would calm me down and encourage me to be patient. Whenever she felt things were not optimal, she would tell me that she wasn’t comfortable with proceeding and that it would be beneficial to wait. She was absolutely right. She and my nurse, Kayla, patiently answered my many questions, and I felt like they really cared. Kayla would send me detailed instructions with kind words of encouragement, and she seemed genuinely happy to share good news with me. I’ll never forget the phone call I received from her letting me know that my one and only egg retrieval had yielded 2 euploid embryos (out of 5 total eggs retrieved), nor the call I received from her letting me know that the transfer was successful and my blood tests showed I was pregnant. I am now 5 months pregnant, and I couldn’t be happier. Everyone I interacted with at Hanabusa was so kind and responsive. I literally never had a bad experience with anyone there. I really don’t feel like I would have received this level of care at another clinic, especially considering the experience I had at the first one I went to. I didn’t have enough money to do more than one cycle, so I honestly believe that if not for Dr. LeBlanc’s expertise and patience, I would not be able to say that IVF worked for me.

Already having an IVF doctor that I was not ecstatic about I decided to try Hanabusa and I am so grateful I did. Dr. Leblanc, the nurses, the front desk, everyone that worked there made me feel right at home. Communication was awesome. Instructions were very clear and most importantly they gave me a son. I will forever be thankful for the Hanabusa Team.

This reviewer had a terrible experience at Hanabusa IVF clinic. They felt that the level of care and communication was poor, and that their time and emotional well-being were not respected. The clinic is also expensive and does not accept insurance.

[Warning to Anyone Considering Hanabusa] I had the absolute worst experience with Hanabusa. From start to finish, the level of care and communication has been far below any reasonable standard. I went in this morning for ultrasound and bloodwork - all done by a nurse and a technician (I’ve never met Dr. Chang aside from the initial video consult). No one explained the treatment plan, just said Dr. Chang would review results later. Around 4pm, I finally got a message in the patient portal outlining four complicated “options” as the next step. Two of the options required urgent medications, including a trigger shot. Yet no one bothered to call me to let me know I needed to pick up the medication WITHIN AN HOUR before the pharmacy closed. (The message came at 4pm, but the pharmacy they sent the prescription to closed at 5pm.) Even if I had seen it right away (which I couldn’t, because I was at work), there was absolutely no way the pharmacy could have filled it in time. On top of that, no nurse called me with instructions on how to administer the trigger shot. One of the “options” the doctor gave was basically, ‘oh well, we can just try again next cycle.’ This is beyond disrespectful. IVF is not only expensive — it’s emotionally draining. To waste an entire cycle because of the clinic’s lack of basic communication is unacceptable. And let’s not forget — this clinic takes no insurance. It’s an all-cash business. Every visit is $500 out of pocket. For that amount of money, this is absolutely not the level of care or respect I deserve. Hanabusa operates as if patients have nothing else to do but stare at their portal all day, ready to drop everything to chase down meds, and as if patients already know how to handle complex treatments without instruction. This is not patient-centered care. It’s careless, dismissive, and shows zero respect for a patient’s time, effort, or emotional well-being. Please reconsider before going here. I am sharing this to warn others so you don’t go through the same heartbreaks and frustration.

The reviewer had a successful treatment at Hanabusa IVF clinic with Dr. Chang. The clinic specializes in women over 40 and provided a personalized plan. The reviewer was grateful for the miracle baby born through this clinic.

We’re so grateful to Dr. Chang and the team at Hanabusa IVF for giving us our miracle baby girl! I'm 43 years old and after two failed egg retrievals with another clinic, we switched to Hanabusa because they specialize in women over 40, and it was the best decision we ever made. The staff is so friendly and organized, and the patient portal made it easy to track meds, instructions, and billing. The office is comfortable and inviting, where other offices made me feel like a science experiment. Dr. Chang was incredibly caring and informative, and you can tell he’s truly invested in helping you succeed. I love that he created a personalized plan for me (I was a very complicated case)... we went with less medication for higher-quality embryos, and it worked! Dr. Chang and his team were with us every step of the way, and I’ll be forever grateful for our miracle baby. No wonder he is world renowned! I feel so lucky we have him in San Diego. 5/5 stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
