Who is eligible for IVF in Portugal?

All adult women may access treatment, including single women and female couples; a diagnosis of infertility is not required in every case.

  • Heterosexual couples

    Permitted, subject to criteria

    Couples may apply subject to medical suitability and treatment consent. Public-funding criteria are assessed separately.

  • Single women

    Permitted, subject to criteria

    Single women may apply for treatment. The provider must confirm the proposed method, clinical suitability and consent requirements.

  • Female couples

    Permitted, subject to criteria

    Female couples may apply, including for donor-sperm treatment. Reciprocal IVF and other methods require separate confirmation.

  • Male couples / surrogacy

    Separate assessment required

    This guide does not establish access to a surrogacy programme. Obtain a separate assessment of the treatment and parentage rules.

Egg and sperm donation rules in Portugal

Current donation rules provide access to donor identity at 18. Historical donations can be subject to transitional rules. Donor eggs, sperm and donated embryos are regulated by the CNPMA.
